ŠEmerald Barkley 2012
Watercolor and white gel pen on watercolor paper

Continuing to explore water color. Fun stuff! Also putting together some pieces for a gallery fundraiser at my school. Woot!

I am new to the medium, so helpful critiques and technique suggestions are totally welcome.

Great use of complimentary colors and figures. I really like the composition here. Nice stylization of the background as well.

Did you use a resist on the white lines or is that white gel pen over the watercolor? I love your composition. Very dynamic. I kind of wish for a few true darks in her face, though. That would be my only suggestion. Oh, an try some salt texturing. I think it would go well with your style.

Thanks so much for your comment! I used a gel pen for the white lines. Good call on the salt texture. I've been experimenting with it, and haven't quite used it in a piece yet.
I'm still really new with watercolor, and I still get a bit nervous getting super dark with the skin colors - it's so hard to go back if I don't like it! But I'm getting more comfortable with them, and I will take your advice to heart. :)

Again, thanks for looking and taking the time to comment!

No problem. I've been experimenting with watercolor lately too. My favorite experiment so far is this one: [link]

Also, two techniques besides the salt texture that I like are using cellophane to create texture and crayon wax to create a resist. Both seem to work pretty well.

Skin tone can be a real pain. Have you tried combining watercolor and prismacolor pencils? I've had some success getting skin tones that way such as in this piece: [link]

You're very welcome for the comment! I really enjoy discussing art techniques!
